Up the mountain - From Szczyrk to Skrzyczne!
14km or thereabouts on a cold, winter's day... and I wasn't dressed nearly as professionally as everyone else out there! But I did have fun all the same :)

A Winter Pilgrimage (sort of)
It's been a long time since my last video - more than a third of a year, I believe! Well, I'm back - and with another epic walk, this time from Wadowice to Kalwaria Zebrzydowska. The former is the birthplace of Karol Wojtyla, who would go on to become Pope John Paul II, and the latter is on a famous pilgrimage route in the south of Poland.

Ok, so it was hardly Mount Everest, but we had a good long walk up and then back down one of Bielsko's smaller mountains (Łysa Góra - but not the bigger one in the central southern part of Poland). Matilda did well for one so young!

I wish I'd taken the right cables with me, but then this video would have become a real monster... it's pretty long as it is. But this is it: my first mountain walking experience around Szczyrk, Poland. And what fun I had!
Fałatówka - The Julian Fałat Museum
Julian Fałat is one of the most well-known and most beloved of all Polish artists, with his work on display in many of the country's biggest museums. But he called this region his home for much of his life, and after he died his house was repurposed to become the Fałatówka, a museum dedicated to his life and creative output.

A Bit of Greek Lightning / Flight from Thessaloniki to Krakow

There was a great storm in Thessaloniki on the night before I flew home. And then the next day I travelled back to Krakow on a quick little Ryanair flight, and saw some beautiful scenery out of the window. Fun times!

I'm terribly disappointed in myself. I had this big plan of travelling from Greece all the way back to Poland, through seven or eight countries. It was going to be great. But getting out of Greece was looking harder and harder - there just didn't seem like there was a way to get from Thessaloniki to Skopje in North Macedonia. Then the owner of the hostel I was staying at in Thessaloniki suggest...
Riding a Tourist Boat in Thessaloniki, Greece
I'm not usually the sort of person to go in for a 'tourist trap' kind of thing, but at the time I thought I only had one day to spend in Thessaloniki, and I reckoned seeing the city from the water would be well worth it. And in fact it totally was - I only paid six Euros for my little adventure, and that included a small beer and a big bowl of peanuts. Yes, it's touristy, but hey - it was fun!
Thessaloniki - Greece's Delightful Second City
Originally I was only scheduled to have a single night in Thessaloniki, and so I tried to make the most of my time there. I didn't know what to expect, and thought there might not be much for me to do there even in the short time I had available. I needn't have worried - Thessaloniki turned out to be a real gem of a place, and I loved every minute I spent there!
Riding the Athens Metro
Athens has a metro - though not all of it runs underground. The three lines of the system covers a huge swathe of land - and when my good friend Machiel left me his metro pass on his way to the airport I thought the time was ripe to explore as much as I could. Join me on the adventure!
Climbing Mount Lycabettus
Athens is such a crowded, crazy city - I love it, to be sure, but sometimes you want to get away from the noise and the hectic atmosphere of the city. The best place to do that, without getting away from the city itself, is to climb Mount Lycabettus, right in the centre. The views are fantastic!
The Big Walk from Athens to Piraeus
When most people visit the glorious Greek capital Athens, their first thought is to go and see the Acropolis. Not me. My first thought is: can you walk from the centre of the capital all the way to its port in Piraeus? Google Maps suggested that I only needed to cover about 10km to get from A to B, but that's not how I roll - why make it A to B and miss out on C through Z? So the final walk too...
Exploring St Joseph's and the Krakus Mound in Podgorze, Krakow
My favourite church in Krakow is not one of the big tourist-y churches close to the centre of the city, but rather St Joseph's over on the Podgorze side of the river. And beyond the church there's the wonderful Krakus Mound, from where you get a simply stunning view of the city. But getting there is only easy if you have a good sense of direction, and on my visit my sense abandoned me, and I go...
Spiders & Scorpions at Gemini Park
There's an exhibition at the moment at Gemini Park here in Bielsko-Biala, chock full of spiders and scorpions. It's not a cheap thing to go and see - the adult tickets are 25zl a pop, and for kids it's 20zl (though the family ticket, at 75zl, will save you a bit overall) - but it's well worth it. All the information is presented in both English and Polish, and the staff are on hand to field any...

Your view is a bit simplified but thank you for the warm words😊
Have you had covid? Have you taken the vaccine? If so, how many times? Greetings from Bielsko and the surrounding area
I'm so glad it's the British who are teaching English in European countries. The British English is the one to learn, not American. And not only accent-wise. It's the British vocabulary, humour and hundreds of little nuances in interaction. 🥰
Niełatwa sprawa. ;)
What about your Polish earnings? Are they satisfactory? Do you work on a contract as a teacher of English?
Go away from Poland...or go to work in Poland
You are an inspiration dear friend Have always great time anywhere
My wife is Polish and we both live in Scotland where I am from. We now have 2 kids and I am getting more and more disappointed by the state of the UK & Scotland and what it offers my children. We recently went to visit her family near Wroclaw after a bit of a hiatus and we couldn't believe how much investment has gone into the area in recent years. There is so much to do for families (kids activities, new swimming pool complexes etc), and in general we feel like we eat much healthier when we live there. Eating out isn't as expensive and there are so many places which serve traditional home cooked food. On top of this, the housing is so individual and unique (many people buy plots of land and build their own), as well as the people. Fashion in general seems to be more individual and more generic. The women aren't all into plastic surgery and looking like clones of each other like they are in Britain. So, I'm looking into what would be involved in selling our house and moving to Poland. We both work remotely so would be able to find jobs quite easily (we hope).
Happy to have You in Poland❤
Co sie z Tobą teraz dzieje? Gdzie mieszkasz?
Glad you did so Now U R 1 of us Hope U stay here 4 good Greetings
Lem is great, but as for the "literary figures", some may find interesting that Polish people call dibs on Joseph Conrad (English-language writer). ;p

I feel like living in the UK now is a danger. I also feel like if I want to give my kids the best future possible, I need to move to Poland
Yes, do that! You will be impressed by the level of earnings in Poland.
I assume that your comment was meant to be ironic, but since some people may not catch it I will clarify: no, the earnings in Poland are not very high, apart from maybe IT jobs.
@@ricken21 Yes, your assumption was correct. I presume that those who have plans to go to live in Poland do a proper research re earnings beforehand.

people still smile too little in Poland, I mean e.g. kindness to strangers, on the streets. A huge difference compared to Norway.

What a pointless rant of shit.. you told us NOTHING about Poland..
Fun fact: ticket checks in most places are very rare, so riding is effecitively free. in the metro you can sneak when another person taps while in the other means there aren't any ticket gates or they are always open. Ticket checks happen more often on the metro and on busier metro stations, and in flooded stations it may be easy to pass the gates. Try avoiding Monastiraki or Omonoia stations unless you only change lines (so you needn't pass through gates) and on Athens station go through the back entrance as there is a lot of staff in the front entrance and i cannot gurantee that no one will check.
Though it is very unethical as it is operated by a company so when not paying you are indirectly stealing money from the staffs salary and anyways it's not that expensive if you don't want to use it you can walk or use a car or something no one forces you to do so.

You should just move and learn language by simply speaking, it's the best way to do that
To wymaga odwagi, psychicznej siły, zaradności, tworzenia zrębów egzystencji z niczego.
A w dalszej kolejności jej częścią. To doprawdy wymarzony scenariusz i świetlana przyszłość dla naszego kraju.

This seems so empty. Was it a Sunday? Some of these streets you walked in Thessaloniki are usually packed with people.
An ex-girlfriend's mother lived very close to this church, well within walking distance even. I visited the church several times, once for a baptism of one of the nephews. It's a pity that you couldn't film inside. All walls are painted, some with quite gruesome depictions of tortured saints, the most gruesome of all is Saint Agatha, with her breasts on a platter. Very nice to see your recording of the church.
What did you think of the metro network? Was it good, modern, with frequent headways etc?
from my experience it's awesome the routes are frequent there is no delay even if you miss it you won't wait more than 5 minutes most time the train arrives instantly the trains are old but they are very well maintained the stations are beautiful and it gets you to places much faster than road

Good video. I too am Walker. My family came to the Colonies in 1767, Irony is, walking for me these days is a bit problematic. Broke my back when I was a kid in 1970. Have always had issues. Worked construction & auto manufacturing, never missed a day. Paying for it now. Just grateful I wasn't born a Koch or Cox. Along with my family Walker aboard the Donegal was my family Ballantine. Walker: Gaelic Mac an Fhucadair. Ballantine is a surname of Scottish Gaelic origin. It is first found in Lanarkshire, where the family had been settled since ancient times. The name has also been variously spelled Ballantyne, Bannatyne, Ballanden, and Ballentine. Origin of the name Ballentine: The etymology, given in William Arthur's An Etymological Dictionary of Family and Christian Names with an Essay on their Derivation and Import (1857), derives the name from Bal, the name of a deity, and teine, meaning fire, and relating to a place where Belenus, or Bal, was worshiped by the Celts.
